In part two I want to discuss the 'Mental' part of the word Mental Toughness.

During my presentation at the NSCA Sport Specific Conference this past weekend in Orlando, Florida, I briefly spoke on the topic of the holy grail of an athlete’s mindset….mental toughness.

This attribute is known to cause serious headaches among the sports performance coaching world! Why is that do you ask?

Personality Revisited

I just returned from presenting at the NSCA Conference in Orlando and had another email regarding personality. I discussed this in a post last week titled 'Which Has A Greater Impact On Winning Or Losing'. Below is some additional content on the subject (reference to the Latin root word persona from personality):

Motivational Math

The question of motivation has come up quite a bit recently during my last few conference presentations. Below is a great summary which can help explain how Sports Axiology can add more layers of depth when measuring and understanding more fully an individual's motivational source:

Traditional Bi-polar Model (2 choices)

Intrinsic vs Extrinsic

Formal Axiology Multi-polar Model (720 possible combinations)

2 viewpoints (world & self) with 3 dimensions in each

This week I am fortunate to be the coaching guest on Mike Boyle's StrengthCoach Podcast. I had a lot of fun talking with the show host Anthony Renna about an article I wrote for Mike's site called 'The Coaching Mindset- How To Get The Most Out Of Your Players'. The podcast is free to listen to by clicking on the following link:

How Fast Can You Stop?

When I have the opportunity to present on the topic of speed and agility, the first question I always ask when working field and court sport athletes is 'How Fast Can You Stop'? Why do I ask this? Because it doesn't matter much in soccer, football, lacrosse, or basketball how fast you can start if you cannot stop!

The same goes for good decision making...
