I was recently asked the following question by the General Manager of a Pro Sports Team which I thought would be beneficial to post here on this blog:
“How does the coach communicate to a player to go to or be in a certain spot on the field at a certain time?"
This is an extrinsic play or “process” question.
Sports Axiology measures the player’s evaluative judgment which includes [on the front end] what method of communication is most effective to get this message across to the player.
Should the coach say take seventeen steps to the right [which is a systemic mind map of sorts] to get the point across, or can the coach say get to the designated spot ASAP without outlining all steps [which is intrinsic and intuitive].
The Sports Axiology profiles measure how sensitive the player is to instructions given in systemic, extrinsic or intrinsic terms.
If the player is sensitive to the systemic and NOT sensitive to the intrinsic, then the coach must communicate the message in exact logic terms, namely “take seventeen steps to the right.” If the player is sensitive to the intrinsic message and NOT to the systemic, then the coach can be effective in telling the player to go to “this spot” on the field.
