For the first time in the history of sport psychology, there is now a performance profile that can answer both of these questions. In fact, this profile is so unique that it has little to do with the traditional field of sports psychology. While athletic success is reliant upon physical abilities, it is the mental ability to make clear and quick decisions in the heat of play that separates the good from the truly great sports heroes. In fact, what if you had the following mental edge characteristics shared by each of these all time sports heroes?
Based on the field of Axiological Psychology (the science of human value), we can now logically and mathematically identify an athlete’s decision making pattern. Why is this such a powerful tool for teams, coaches, agents, and individual athletes? Here are just a few of the reasons…
Take a look at the example below regarding player selection on a team: Say that two players are competing for the same position on a successful team. In order to determine who gets the position, physical and mental attributes are considered. Both players share the same physical qualities of speed, strength, and power. However, regarding clarity of judgment, player A has the ability to quickly determine what is happening and how to cope or resolve the situation. Player B does not have this ability, and therefore struggles with making critical decisions that can drastically change the game when it counts the most. Which player should be selected for the position? If You Have Tried Traditional Sports Psychology Methods before... The majority of mental training resources show the athlete what steps they think should be taken to try and get into the ‘Zone’ state of mind, for example, how to improve focus, become mentally tough, and overcome nervousness. However, wouldn’t the coach or the athlete first need to know the strengths and weaknesses of their own thinking patterns? What if one or more of the suggestions from these resources bear little meaning or value simply because the athlete is wired a different way? Never before have coaches and parents had access to measuring their athlete’s inner potential as it relates to decision making ability. While traditional sports psychology focuses primarily in the areas of behavior and social concepts, the InnerTactics for Sport profile measures HOW an athlete actually thinks. This information gives great insight into how best to communicate with athletes and how to leverage their mental strengths and manage any area(s) of potential weakness. |
